ZAHANA
is named after a Malagasy word for a medicinal plant
(Phyllarthron madagascariensis)
Zahana is a registered non-profit organization, based in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. Zahana was founded by concerned Malagasy citizens to address many of the pressing needs for development in their country. Focusing on rural development, Zahana is working on education, sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture, reforestation, income generating projects and the revitalization of traditional Malagasy medicine.
Zahana has a (volunteer) board of directors and volunteer members from the community. Almost all members of Zahana are based in Madagascar and three of the non-permanent counselors are abroad (USA and France). Due to the economic realities of Madagascar there is no membership fee and as of present and no paid staff.
Zahana has been focusing on making village life more attractive and livable so people don't have to leave their village in the first place in search of a better life. This can be done for example by providing development partnerships to built access to clean water or a school for their children.
Almost a decade back Madagascar experienced a very tumultuous political situation and as a result many people fled the cities in search of safety in countryside. In the case of the village of Fiadanana, Zahana's pilot village, its population increased by 20% and after the political situation stabilized most of the newcomers decided to stay, since they discovered the advantages of the rural over the city life.
As a pilot project Zahana is working with the village ofFiadananain the region of Bongolava. It is our vision that the lessons learned from this hands-on development experience will serve as a model for the expansion of the project on a larger scale. First in the neighboring communities that have been inspired by the example, and then, provided there is funding, on a larger national scale in all regions of Madagascar.
Based on the ties established in October 2008, Zahana has just expended its work over the village ofFiarenana , a village next to Fiadanana.Neighboring villages witnessed the big improvements that, for example, clean waterand aschool brought to Fiadanana and approached Zahana for help as well. To demonstrate their willingness to collaborate with Zahana they have already made 25,000 bricks for a future school building. In contrast to many other villages over 80% of the parents had gone to school as children themselves, can all read and write, and see the value and need for education for their children. The community envisions a school building that could become a learning center for agriculture, health education and rural improvement that would function more as a rural university than a grade school in the traditional sense.
SunNight Solar has generously included Zahana in their “Buy One - Give One” (BoGo) partner program. When you buy a solar flashlight for yourself on-line, you can donate one to Zahana with the same click.Click here to find out more and order your solar flashlight
->Fabric and clothing made from bamboo fibres:
At the last public heath event in Honolulu, September 2008, we met Limin, who has started a line of bamboo fabric products, such as bed sheets and other clothing.
